Iconic 17th-century Indian warrior king who founded the #Maratha #Empire. He is considered one of the greatest warriors & rulers in Indian history. Shivaji was born in 1630 in the hill-fort of #Shivneri, near the city of #Junnar, which is now in #Pune district. He was the son of #ShahajiBhosale, a Maratha General who served the Deccan Sultanates.
#Shivaji was a brilliant military strategist & tactician, and he led his forces to victory against the much larger and better-equipped armies of the Mughal Empire & the Sultanate of Bijapur. Shivaji was also a skilled administrator, and he established a strong and efficient government in his kingdom. He was a devout Hindu, and he promoted religious tolerance in his kingdom. Shivaji died in 1680, but his legacy lives on. He is an iconic & emotive national hero in India, and his birthday is celebrated as a public holiday.
