Jawahar Lal Nehru - A tryst with Yoga
Iconic #JawaharlalNehru, the 1st Prime Minister of India, was a strong advocate of #Yoga. He believed that Yoga could help to improve physical and mental health & promoted its use in India and around the world.
Nehru's legacy in Yoga:-
First political leader to recognize the potential of Yoga to improve health and well-being.
He moved a Resolution in the Indian Parliament in 1952 stating that Yoga should be a part of India's health education.
He ensured that Yoga exercises were included in the 'National Plan of Physical Education and Recreation' in 1953.
He helped to make Yoga more accessible to the public by introducing it into the school system and by providing Govt funding for Yoga Research and Education.
He wrote about the benefits of Yoga in his book "The Discovery of India". He helped popularize Yoga by writing about it in his books.
He himself was an advanced practitioner of Yoga and encouraged others to also practice it.
Nehru's efforts helped to make Yoga more widely known and practiced activity.
He helped to legitimize yoga by promoting it as a Scientific and effective form of exercise.
Nehru's Legacy remains his profound impact on the practice of Yoga across the globe. Today Yoga is a widely accepted and practised form of exercise that is known for its many benefits to physical and mental health.
