Somnath Chatterjee / Iconic Lok Sabha Speaker
#SomnathChatterjee will always remain a towering figure in Indian politics. He was a 10-time #Member_of_Parliament, a #Barrister, and a #CommunistLeader. He was also the first Communist to be elected #Speaker of the #LokSabha.
Chatterjee was born in #Tezpur, #Assam, in 1929 to the family of the legendary N.C. Chatterjee, a famous Barrister, Intellectual, Nationalist & Founder of the All India Civil Liberties Union. He studied law at the University of Calcutta and Jesus College, Cambridge. He was admitted to The Bar in 1952.
He joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1968 and was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1971.
Somnath Chatterjee was a vocal critic of the Government's economic policies, which he believed were favoring the rich at the expense of the poor. He was also critical of the government's human rights record.
In 2004, Chatterjee was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He was the first Communist to hold this position. As Speaker, #Chatterjee was known for his impartiality and his commitment to upholding the Rules of the House. He was also known for his eloquence and his ability to defuse tense situations.
Chatterjee retired from politics in 2009. He passed away in 2018 at the age of 89.
