Bhutan : The Dzong Architecture

#Dzongs are a distinctive type of fortified Monastery Architecture found mainly in #Bhutan and #Tibet

They are massive in style with towering exterior walls surrounding a complex of courtyards, temples, administrative offices, and monks' accommodation.

The Dzongs of Bhutan were built by the Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a Tibetan Lama who unified the country in the 17th century. The Dzongs served as the Religious, Military, and Administrative Centers of their respective Districts. They were also used as a refuge for the population in times of war.

Today, the Dzongs are still important religious and cultural centers in Bhutan. They are also popular Tourist Destinations.

  • Trongsa Dzong is located in the Trongsa Valley and is one of the largest Dzongs in Bhutan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular Tourist Destination.

  • Jambay Lhakhang is located in the Bumthang Valley and is one of the oldest Dzongs in Bhutan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular Tourist Destination.
