Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhaba The Man who Destiny chose to make India a Self Reliant & Nuclear Nation!

Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha 
(30th Oct 1909 – 24th Jan 1966) was a pioneering & towering  Indian Nuclear Physicist who is widely credited as the "Father of the Indian Nuclear Programme". 


He was the Founding Director and Professor of Physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), as well as the Founding Director of the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay (AEET) which was renamed the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in his honour. TIFR and AEET served as the cornerstone of the Indian nuclear energy and weapons programme.

Bhabha was born into a Parsi family in Bombay, British India. He studied physics at the Royal Institute of Science, Bombay, and then went on to do his PhD at the University of Cambridge. After graduating from Cambridge, Bhabha worked as a Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology and the University of Manchester.

In 1939, Bhabha returned to India and founded the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay. Bhabha was the first Chairman of the Indian Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy. He was also a member of the Indian Space Research Organisation.

Bhabha was a brilliant physicist and a visionary leader. He played a pivotal role in the development of India's nuclear and space programmes. He was also a strong advocate for international cooperation in science and technology.

Bhabha died in a plane crash in 1966 at the age of 56. It is rumoured that Foreign Intelligence Agencies were extremely "worried" about his remarkable skills in the field of Nuclear Science… and his indomitable will to make India a Nuclear Nation.  He was posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Bhabha was a towering figure in the history of Indian Nuclear Science and Technology. He was a brilliant physicist, a visionary leader, and a strong advocate for a Self Reliant "Nuclear" India.  His legacy of Excellence continues to inspire Nuclear scientists and engineers around the world.
