Onam - Kerala

Onam: The Harvest Festival of Kerala

Onam is a 10-day harvest festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala.
It is one of the most important festivals in Kerala and is a time for family reunions, feasting, and cultural events.

The Legend of Onam tells the story of King Mahabali, a benevolent ruler who was so loved by his people that the Gods became jealous. To get rid of Mahabali, the gods tricked him into going to the underworld. However, Mahabali promised to visit his people once a year, and Onam is the time when he is said to return.
The festivities of Onam begin on the first day of the Malayalam month of Chingam, which is usually in August or September. On this day, people clean their homes and decorate them with flowers.
They also prepare a special dish called Onam Sadya, which is a feast of 26 different dishes.
The main showcase of Onam is the Pookalam, a colorful flower arrangement made on the ground. Pookalams are made in front of houses, temples, and other public places. The patterns of the Pookalams vary from simple to elaborate, and they are often decorated with fruits, vegetables, and rice cakes.
Other traditional Onam activities include Boat Races, folk dances & games. On the last day of Onam (Thiruvonam)
people dress in their best clothes and visit temples to pray for a good harvest and prosperity in the coming year.

Puli Kali "Tiger Dance" is a recreational Folk Art from the State of Kerala, India. It is performed by trained artists to entertain people on the occasion of Onam.
