Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence 
(28th June 1806 – 4th July 1857) was a British Military Officer, surveyor, administrator and statesman in British India.

He is best known for :-
▶️Leading a group of administrators in the Punjab affectionately known as Henry Lawrence's "Young Men", 

▶️As the Founder of the Lawrence Military Asylums 

▶️For his Heroic death at the Siege of Lucknow in 1857. 

Lawrence was born in Matura, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), to a family of Scottish descent. He was the second of three brothers, all of whom went on to distinguished careers in India. 

His elder brother, John Lawrence, was later Viceroy of India, and his younger brother, George Lawrence, was a General in the British Indian Army.
Lawrence joined the Bengal Artillery in 1822 and served in the First Anglo-Burmese War. He then transferred to the survey department, where he worked on the mapping of the Punjab. 

In 1839, he was appointed to the Political Agency at Firozpur, in the Punjab. He quickly gained a reputation for his administrative skills and his ability to get along with the local people.
In 1846, Lawrence was appointed Agent to the Governor-General in the North-West Frontier Province. He played a key role in the negotiations that led to the peaceful Annexation of the Punjab in 1849. He was then appointed Resident at Lucknow, where he helped to implement the reforms that were intended to bring the Province under British control.
When the Indian Rebellion broke out in 1857, Lawrence was one of the first British officials to be targeted by the Rebels. He was killed during the Siege of Lucknow on 4th of July 1857.
Lawrence was a highly respected figure in British India. He was known for his remarkable administrative skills, his commitment to improving the lives of the People of India, and his willingness to work with the local people. 

He is remembered as one of the most important figures in the development of British Rule in India.
His notable achievements:
🔹He was The Founder of the Lawrence Military Asylums, which later became the Lawrence Schools.

🔹He helped to implement the reforms that led to the Peaceful Annexation annexation of the Punjab in 1849.

🔹He was Resident at Lucknow during the Siege of Lucknow, where he helped to organize the defence of the city.

🔹He was killed during the Siege of Lucknow on 4 July 1857.

Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence was a dedicated administrator and a champion of the Indian people. His death was a major blow to the British during the Indian Rebellion, but his legacy lives on in the Lawrence Schools and in the hearts of the students whose lives he impacts on even today.
