Awadh-Lucknow / A Tourism Treasure

#Lucknow, the Capital of the Indian State of #UttarPradesh, boasts a rich & captivating History that spans millennia. Its name is believed to have originated from #Lakshmanpur, named after Lakshmana, the brother of #LordRama, a revered Hindu deity. Archaeological evidence suggests settlements in the Lucknow region dating back to 3000 BC.

The city's recorded history begins in the 13th century when Lakshman Teela, a high mound on the banks of the Gomti River. By the end of the 13th century, The Fort had fallen under the control of the Sharqi Rulers of Jaunpur, who held it until 1476.

In 1528, Lucknow's fortunes changed when it was captured by Babur, the Founder of the Mughal Empire. The City became part of the Awadh Province under Mughal Rule, experiencing a period of prosperity & cultural flourishing.

Asaf-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh from 1775 to 1797, shifted the provincial capital from Faizabad to Lucknow, transforming it into a vibrant Metropolis. He patronized the arts, architecture & literature, earning Lucknow the epithet "Shiraz-e-Hind" or "The Shiraz of India," alluding to the famed Persian City of #Shiraz.

Lucknow's Cultural Renaissance was marked by the emergence of Urdu Poetry, the development of the Nawabi Cuisine & the rise of exquisite artesanato, such as chikankari embroidery and zardozi work. The city became a hub of refinement &  elegance, renowned for its courteous manners, lavish hospitality & love for poetry &  music.

However, the 19th century brought political upheavals as The British East India Company's influence grew. In 1856, Lucknow became a focal point of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, also known as the First War of Indian Independence. The Residency, the British Garrison in Lucknow, was besieged for 87 days by Rebel Forces, becoming a symbol of Resistance against British Rule.

After the Rebellion's suppression, #Lucknow came under direct British control. The city's political significance diminished, but its cultural heritage remained vibrant. Lucknow continued to be a center of Urdu literature, music & cuisine, maintaining its reputation as a city of refined culture & gracious hospitality.
