History:
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple has a long and rich history. It is believed that the original temple was built by Raja Harishchandra. The Temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The current structure was built in the 18th century by the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar.

The Lingam is covered by a jeweled crown which is placed over the Gold Mask of TriMukh Shiva. The Crown is said to be from the age of Pandavas and consists of diamonds, emeralds, and many precious stones. The Crown is displayed every Monday from 4-5 pm (Shiva).

During the winters, the Vigraha (Deity) of The Temple is carried down to Ukhimath to be worshipped for the next six months.
King Janmejay, grandson of The Pandavas, gave the Ancient Priests Right of Worshiping at this Temple and donated the whole Kedar region to Lord Shiva...they have been worshiping ever since.
