Who is RSS's Pracharak - Sanjay Joshi? ©RohitSinghNegi

Sanjay Vinayak Joshi, born April 6, 1962, in Nagpur, India, is a former Indian politician and a prominent figure associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A mechanical engineer by training, Joshi left his career as a lecturer to become a full-time RSS pracharak (volunteer) in Maharashtra. Known for his organizational skills, he was deputed to the BJP in Gujarat in 1988 to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence.
Contributions to RSS:
Organizational Work as a Pracharak: Joshi dedicated himself to the RSS, embracing its ethos of selfless service and discipline. As a pracharak, he worked to expand the RSS’s network, focusing on ideological training and cadre-building in Maharashtra and later in Gujarat.
Strengthening BJP-RSS Synergy: Deputed to the BJP, Joshi played a key role in aligning the party’s activities with RSS ideology. His efforts in Gujarat from 1988 helped transform the BJP into a formidable political force, contributing to its 1995 electoral victory under Keshubhai Patel.
Grassroots Mobilization: Joshi’s ability to connect with ground-level workers bolstered the RSS’s influence within the BJP. His organizational acumen was instrumental in building a robust party structure, particularly in Gujarat, where he worked alongside leaders like Narendra Modi.
Ideological Reinforcement: Even after being sidelined from the BJP, Joshi remained active in RSS circles, participating in events like the 2016 seminar on “Nationalism and Indian Culture” in Lucknow, organized by RSS volunteers. He continued to advocate for RSS values, such as Hindu unity and cultural nationalism.
Resilience Amid Controversy: Despite facing setbacks, including a 2005 scandal involving a doctored CD that led to his temporary exit from the BJP, Joshi maintained RSS support. The RSS backed his return to the BJP in 2011 under Nitin Gadkari, reflecting his enduring influence within the organization.
Joshi’s contributions lie in his behind-the-scenes work to strengthen the RSS’s organizational framework and its political arm, the BJP, though his career was marked by tensions, notably with Narendra Modi, leading to his eventual marginalization in active politics. Recent speculation about his return to a prominent BJP role, backed by the RSS, underscores his lasting relevance within the Sangh Parivar.
