Vidhan Bhavan: A Heritage Showcase



The Vidhan Bhavan in Lucknow, India, is a magnificent architectural marvel that serves as the seat of the Uttar Pradesh legislature. Built in the Indo-Saracenic style, The Building is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the state. Its construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1928, making it a landmark of the city.

The Foundation and Construction

The Foundation Stone of the Vidhan Bhavan was laid by Sir Harcourt Butler, the then Governor of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, on December 15, 1922. The building was designed by Sir S. Swinton Jacob and Heera Singh…. built by Messrs. Martin and Co. at a cost of Rs. 21 lakhs.

The construction of the Vidhan Bhavan was a significant undertaking, involving the use of local materials and skilled craftsmanship. The facade of the building is made of carved light brown sandstone from Mirzapur, while the interior features marble from Agra and Jaipur. The building also boasts circular marble staircases and walls adorned with paintings.

Architectural Style and Features

The Vidhan Bhavan is a prime example of the Indo-Saracenic Architectural Style, which blends many  elements of Indian, Islamic & European Architecture. The Building is characterized by its crescent-shaped facade, a prominent dome, and ornate arches and windows. The Dome, which is the focal point of the building, is surrounded by sculpted figures and adorned with a chhatri, or skylight.

The interior of the Vidhan Bhavan is equally impressive, featuring spacious halls, galleries, and verandas. The main chamber of the building is octagonal in shape with a domed roof, while a separate chamber for the upper house was constructed between 1935 and 1937.
